Szén — Black Vase with Textured Relief

Szén is a handmade vase with a tall, gently barrel-shaped body whose entire surface is covered in a dense, churning relief. The texture builds from fine grooves and swellings that gather into irregular vertical bands — recalling bark, charred rock, or a structure seen under a microscope. The rim is left as ragged and uneven as the body itself, so the form is never quite "closed off" anywhere.

The deep, wholly matte black absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which means the object reads purely through shadow — under raking light the relief turns deep and predatory, while in diffuse light it settles back into a single heavy mass. The vase is handcrafted in a small studio, so the distribution of the grooves, the line of the rim and the intensity of the texture are unique to each piece. The work reads first as sculpture and looks best standing alone, against a pale background.
