Tövis — Black Sculptural Vase with Spikes

Tövis is a handmade vase built on a plain cylindrical body from which sharply pointed spikes emerge in every direction. Each one rises out of the surface through a soft, funnel-like flare before narrowing and reaching far into the surrounding space — so the piece occupies considerably more room than the cylinder alone would suggest. The silhouette is at once aggressive and organic, close to a plant thorn or a sea urchin.

Tension also comes from the meeting of two finishes: the body stays matte and densely grained, absorbing light, while the spikes are finished in a deep gloss that gathers sharp highlights along their edges. That contrast is what keeps the form legible within all that black. The work is handcrafted in a small studio, which means the spacing, length and angle of the spikes differ from one piece to the next. The object looks best standing alone, against a pale background with room to breathe around it.
