Zátony — Ceramic Vase with Textured Surface

Zátony is a handmade vase with a compact, egg-shaped silhouette finished with a short, clearly defined neck. The form itself is as simple and quiet as possible — all the attention falls on the surface, which is covered in a thick, heavily foamed glaze with an irregular, cratered grain. The texture recalls limestone rock, coral, or a stone slowly encrusting at the water's edge.

The cool cream white is broken in places by warmer flashes of pink and ochre showing through from beneath the glaze, like traces of rust or washed-out pigment. This effect develops in the firing and is never fully predictable, so the distribution of the grain, the depth of the craters and the intensity of the coloured patches differ in every example — a natural characteristic of handmade work. The vase sits well alongside raw wood, linen and stone; it holds its own alone, though it will just as happily take a single dried stem.
