Kavics — Small Footed Bowl

Kavics is a handmade bowl with a clean, geometric structure: a hemispherical cup resting on a short cylindrical foot that lifts it clear of the surface and gives the whole thing the character of a miniature plinth. The form is as spare as it gets — two simple volumes set together with no ornament whatsoever. Its small scale means the object reads more as a sculptural detail than as functional tableware.

All the charm lies in the material. The pale, near-white surface is scattered with dark flecks and fine irregular pits that recall travertine, or a stone worn hollow by water. That pattern differs on every piece and cannot be repeated. The work is handcrafted in a small studio, so variations in tone, in the density of the speckling and in texture belong to the nature of handmade work. The bowl looks lovely standing alone on a shelf or sideboard, and will just as readily hold jewellery or small everyday things.
