Obszidián — Black Sculptural Vase

Obszidián is a handmade vase with a strong, spreading silhouette — a narrow foot widens as it rises and opens into broad, lifted shoulders crowned by an uneven, torn rim. Deep vertical folds cut across the front, running the full height of the body like creases in cloth or layers of cooled lava. The form carries a distinct tension: heavy and archaic, yet stretched open and reaching upward.

The surface stays raw and heavily grained, with visible grit and a rough, volcanic texture that swallows light. The deep matte black throws back no highlights, so the piece reads first as a silhouette and as the play of shadow within its folds. The object is handcrafted in a small studio, which means the run of the folds, the outline of the rim and the intensity of the texture are unique to each example. The work is at its best standing alone, on a plinth or against a pale background, lit from the side.
